Despite being tucked in behind the parapet of the George Hotel building in St Kilda, this large penthouse has magnificent views across Port Phillip Bay and to the city and offered up a marvellous potential for renovation. In the completed project, walls and ceilings were taken to white, with the space given weight by staining black the existing hardwood floors, and the volume defined by panelling the central laundry pod with veneered timber. Timber, stone and steel were successfully craned up six storeys from busy Fitzroy Street to finish the kitchen in stainless steel and black-rubbed American oak.
The original layout was largely retained by making one bedroom a study and merging its space with the living room, further enhancing the general feeling of the spaciousness of the apartment. The new stair led up to the new roof top deck.
The initial brief from the client was to “clean up” the interior, however the project scope expanded to incorporate clean lines, quality finishes and the space to feel cool and masculine.
