This project exemplifies the ethos of Michael Jan Studio and was shortlisted in 2014 for a Houses Award. The clients had downsized from a Victorian mansion to this 1980s single level home on 980 square metres with two street frontages. Their brief to Michael Jan Studio was to add a lofty modern extension comprising an additional study, a winter room and summer room and family kitchen, whilst retaining the existing paved car entry, established pear tree lined pedestrian entry and bedroom wing.
The resultant design achieves the brief beautifully and brings light and luxury into the space. Broken slabs of Calacatta and Carrara marbles create a statement terrazzo floor which spills elegantly into the garden spaces when the double glazed steel windows and doors open to their full wall width. A dramatic western red cedar acoustic ceiling in the living, dining and kitchen areas softens the outlook allowing the bronzed metals and black steel features to be appreciated to their full potential.
